First tried this Mexican food in North Carolina and soon learned that there are many of them around but with different names...you can tell when you see the menu. Now as a person that likes an eating adventure I have tried many of those different name same food restaurants and they are quite similar but not exactly the same. The one difference with this one here in Excelsior El maguey is that they serve the best fajitas out of all of them...my husband is the fajita expert here...they use more seasoning than the others and that is what the difference is. Now, I call this mild Mexican food but you can spice it up with hot sauce or jalapenos. Lots of choices and reasonable prices. Always fresh and fast and good portion sizes. Not all of the servers can speak English totally but they seem to do well enough to get it right. I like all types of Mexican food I eat here when I am in the mood for their style of food. if you are ever in Excelsior give it a try...whether it is the first time you have eaten this style or if you want to try the BEST fajitas around. The staff are very efficient and have become friendly to us over the years. Glad to have a good place to eat in our small town.

There is a very popular misconception that El Maquey is sort of family owned one of kind authentic mexican restaurant. Nothing could be further from the truth. This is a chain with franchises all over the region. They also share basically the same menu, food, ingredients, and preparation as Mi Hacienda, La Fluente, and who knows how many others. This is basically Taco Bell with Hispanic wait staff, chips and salsa, white cheese on every dish, and a little higher price. The food is not terrible. Its just ok. Also, just like Taco Bell, every dish tastes the same, no matter what you order.

Yup it is a chain. I like the food just fine. I have seen the same menu about everywhere I go for Mexican food. The chips are to thin dry, and mostly tasteless. The salsa has become more like a tomato juice. Portions seem to have gotten smaller. Coke products so don't ask for a Pepsi. The price is good. Locals pour in with kids and all. I usually judge a Mexican restaurant by the way they prepare tamales these are about average, not in a corn husk. In this town it is about all we have. We could use a Chubbies.

Very good American/ Mexican food. Lunch prices are much better then dinner. Love the cheese dip and fajitas.

They do a very good job on the carnitas here, they're tender and juicy the way they're supposed to be. Come to think of it I like most of the pork menu items here. The guacamole's good and the ice tea is consistently strong.

I haven't been to this restaurant in over 10 years since I moved away. I was in town and needed a quick bite for lunch. The prices are good and the lunch chimi is as tasty as I remembered. Service is quick and the waiters are attentive. The food does have more of a tex-mex style than some, but it is really good for the price and if you are in town it is worth a try.

My extended family has been gathering here every Wednesday for 'family night dinner' for years. Why here? We can all find something we like. There is lots of variety, we enjoy their fresh chips and cheese and salsa, and their margaritas are awesome. We especially love....shrimp nachos, chicken nachos (the kids order without onions), chimichanga, burrito Jalisco, and chicken fajitas (enough for two). Our service is always fast and friendly and we live the family that runs the place. Definitely one of our favorites.

Close to what I thought good Mexican was. Just come here for the drinks and even then the staff is trash. Giving it 2 stars only because I live so close and it's the only Mexican in this crap a** town.

Even the beans were bad. Not sure why the place is always busy. We ordered fried avacado, and they serve it with marinara. I've never used the word "ghastly" in a restaurant review before- but in this case it applies.

Once upon a time I really enjoyed eating here, but lately both the service and the quality is lacking. The salsa has no flavor, tacos are soggy, fajitas tasteless and greasy, and rice and beans are bland. To top it off you practically have to grab your waiter's arm to get a drink or your salsa refilled. The only thing that is still good here are the margaritas. Skip the food and just come here for a drink.

Diverse menu with choice of ground beef or shredded. This evening our group of 13 appeared and were seated together at once. Staff is pleasant and quick. My chimichanga dinner included guacamole and fresh salsa, beans and rice. Chimichanga was cooked quickly, not greasy. Menu is boring only if you don't add the seasonings and hot sauce to kick start your entree. Food prices reasonable. It was nice to see many diners on a Wednesday. It is great to see them doing well. Great cocktails, too.

Just blobs of food on a plate. Nothing special to taste or look at. Too much beans, too little spices, bland, boring Mexican food... can you imagine such a thing? Well, it's here!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
